When Love Was (two short excerpts)

When Love Was was written and completed before Here Lies Memory. There are moments inside this new book that echo and pull at the characters from Here Lies Memory as well as from Daughters of the Rivers (Volume Two of The Pittsburgh Trilogy, a novel which most likely be published under a different title).

Stylistically, this new work harkens back to Dream Memoirs of a Fabulist and Between Appear and Disappear. This new book is a pillow book. It is a series of poetic prose pieces with photographs. Vignettes. The narrators struggle with what love was when love appeared to be present. And the narrators struggle with loss.

This work would not have been possible had I not had a residency at the Akademie Schloss Solitude above Stuttgart, Germany. Nor would it have been possible had I not had the conversations that I had throughout the summer of 2012 with Basir Mahmood, Youki Hirakawa and Asumi, Sybille Neumeyer, Patrick Ritter, Angela Butterstein, and Silke Pfluger.
